Blade battery 2.0 enables ultra-fast Flash charging for electric vehicles

Just five minutes of charging for several hundred kilometers of driving range. That is the ambition behind the new Flash charging technology unveiled by BYD, capable of delivering up to 1500 kW through a single connector.

The Chinese electric vehicle and battery manufacturer combines this new ultra-fast charging system with the second generation of its Blade battery. Together, the Blade battery 2.0 and Flash charging promise dramatically faster charging times and a new technological milestone for battery electric vehicles.

Ultra-fast charging in minutes

According to figures released by BYD, charging from 10% to 70% takes just five minutes, while reaching 97% charge from the same starting level requires only nine minutes.

The performance remains stable even at temperatures as low as -30 °C, conditions that normally cause a significant reduction in charging speed.

The new Blade battery also delivers longer driving range. Thanks to a 5% increase in energy density, vehicles equipped with the system can reach ranges exceeding 1000 km on a single charge.

Blade battery research and technological development

The new technology is the result of an extensive research and development program aimed at overcoming the barriers many consumers still associate with fully electric mobility.

Developed after six years of research, the second-generation Blade battery improves charging speed through a new FlashPass ion transport system designed to overcome the limits of lithium iron phosphate batteries. The architecture is based on three key innovations:

  • Flash-Release cathode, featuring a multi-layer directional architecture with particles of different sizes that enable dense packing and rapid deintercalation
  • Flash-Flow electrolyte, optimized through artificial intelligence to deliver high ionic conductivity and rapid ion mobility
  • Flash-Intercalate anode, with a multidimensional lithium insertion structure that enables 360° high-speed lithium-ion intercalation in three dimensions

Further innovations in the anode include a high-throughput electrode restructuring process and graphite particles aligned perpendicular to the electrode plane. This design reduces lithium-ion transport resistance and allows faster and smoother intercalation.

A new technological frontier for battery electric vehicles

The Blade battery 2.0 has passed a series of new benchmark safety tests, including the world’s first combined Flash charging and nail penetration test.

Even after 500 Flash charging cycles, the battery showed no signs of overheating, smoke or fire. Additional safety tests included forced short-circuit conditions affecting four cells simultaneously, again without fires or explosions, even when temperatures exceeded 700 °C.

The new generation also improves durability, reducing total capacity degradation by 2.5% compared with the previous version.

Flash Charger infrastructure expands in China

The second pillar of BYD’s innovation is the Flash Charger, capable of delivering up to 1500 kW through a single connector designed specifically for the Chinese market.

The system features a distinctive T-shaped design. BYD has already installed 4239 Flash charging stations across China and plans to deploy 20000 units by the end of the year.

Each station is paired with an ultra-fast discharge energy storage system designed to help overcome grid constraints. The storage battery charges at lower speeds and acts both as an energy reservoir that prevents grid overload and as a power booster that enables extremely high charging rates.

Cleaner and more practical charging stations

Conventional charging stations are often considered bulky and difficult to handle, with heavy connectors and cables that may become dirty or wet when touching the ground.

The Flash Charger’s T-shaped design lifts these components away from potential contaminants. A lighter connector and a pulley-guided sliding cable system also make it easier to plug in vehicles regardless of the position of their charging port.
