Italy’s grid operator ranks in the Top 1% globally in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook 2026, achieving the highest ESG score among more than 200 power utilities.

Terna tops global sustainability ranking among electric utilities
Terna has once again been recognized among the world’s sustainability leaders. The group led by CEO Giuseppina Di Foggia earned a “Top 1%” distinction, the highest classification within the Sustainability Yearbook 2026, the annual ESG reference publication compiled by S&P Global.
The international rating agency assessed the ESG performance of more than 9,200 companies worldwide. Terna received a score of 90 out of 100 in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025, awarded on November 14, marking the highest global result among the more than 200 electric utilities analyzed. The sector average stood at 42 points.
This is the ninth year that the operator of Italy’s National Transmission Grid has achieved the highest evaluation level within the Sustainability Yearbook.
ESG performance behind Terna’s leadership
S&P Global’s evaluation is based on rigorous economic, environmental and social criteria covering the full spectrum of ESG dimensions. These include environmental impact, climate strategy, community engagement, human capital management, workplace safety, stakeholder relations, corporate governance, risk management, human rights compliance and supply chain oversight.
The recognition reflects Terna’s performance across these ESG areas, including the quality and reliability of its sustainability reporting, human capital policies and CO2 emissions reduction efforts. The company has also committed to achieving Net Zero Science Based targets by 2050, as outlined in the latest update of its 2024-2028 industrial plan.
A strategic role in the energy transition
The global ranking reinforces Terna’s position as a key enabler of the energy transition, supporting a power grid that is increasingly sustainable, secure and resilient.
Sustainability represents one of Terna’s core strategic drivers and plays a central role in value creation, both for the company and for the broader energy system. More than 99% of the group’s investments qualify as sustainable under the eligibility criteria introduced by the European Union Taxonomy.
Terna’s leadership in the S&P sustainability ranking underscores the growing importance of ESG performance in shaping the competitive landscape of global utilities.
