Porsche Cayenne goes wireless with One Box technology

Charging just got easier. Using the same wireless technology we rely on daily for our smartphones, Porsche is bringing induction charging to high-performance vehicles. With a practical floor-mounted plate, the electric battery of the Porsche Cayenne can be recharged effortlessly. Unveiled at the IAA Mobility show in Munich (where Rinnovabili will also be present) this innovation positions Porsche at the forefront of the industry as the first automaker to launch an 11 kW wireless charging system.

The system, called One Box, is designed to replace the traditional wallbox. It will recharge the next fully electric generation of the Porsche Cayenne, set to debut by the end of 2025. Starting in 2026, the device will be available as an optional feature for Porsche owners.

How Porsche One Box wireless charging works

According to Porsche, about 75% of all charging for its fully electric models takes place at home, making wireless charging particularly valuable. The Porsche Wireless Charging plate can be installed in a garage, a covered space, or an outdoor parking spot and connected directly to the power grid. The system achieves an energy transfer efficiency of up to 90%.

Just like with smartphones, vehicles also need compatible hardware. The next electric Cayenne will offer, as an option, a receiving unit installed under the chassis. To start charging, drivers only need to park above the plate. It automatically lowers, and energy transfer begins seamlessly across just a few centimeters. The entire process is integrated into the My Porsche app, enabling owners to monitor charging status and authorize sessions across multiple vehicles. Once the parking brake is engaged, charging begins automatically.

Induction charging explained

Inductive charging works by transmitting energy wirelessly through a magnetic field. The floor plate houses a copper and ferrite transmitter coil powered by alternating current, which generates a magnetic field. Porsche’s system uses ultra-wideband technology to precisely align the car over the plate. When in position, the driver receives a notification. In the secondary onboard coil, which acts as the receiver, the magnetic field generates alternating current. A rectifier then converts it into direct current, which is stored in the Cayenne’s high-voltage battery.

Durable and weather-resistant

The One Box floor plate is designed for all conditions, with all live components sealed and resistant to rain and snow. Even the weight of heavy vehicles driving over it will not cause damage. Electromagnetic emissions remain confined beneath the vehicle’s chassis during charging.

At the Munich Auto Show, Porsche will showcase a model finished with a special fluorescent coating. Once activated by electricity, the Cayenne’s body transforms into a vivid, dynamic surface, reflecting a unique camouflage-inspired design created by Porsche Style.
