Smart bike helmet and road safety

In Italy, the growth of electric mobility has been striking. Electric bikes and scooters have become a sustainable alternative to traditional transport, reducing emissions and encouraging a more active lifestyle. However, the rise in riders on urban roads has brought increasing attention to road-safety risks.

In 2024, 204 fatal accidents involving cyclists were recorded by the ASAPS-SAPIDATA Observatory. Beyond these tragic cases, many other cyclists are injured every year, often with serious consequences. Proper protection is essential, especially given the risks associated with head trauma.

Smart bike helmet, safety first

The helmet remains the most important piece of protective gear for cyclists. Recent innovations have transformed helmets from simple safety equipment into advanced technological devices. From the United States comes the Alpha Wave Helmet, a smart bike helmet equipped with the Release Layer System (RLS). In the event of an impact, the helmet’s four external panels are designed to detach upon contact.

This architecture helps dissipate rotational forces that, during an oblique collision, are transmitted to the brain and often lead to severe injuries.

What happens during rotational injuries?

In bicycle crashes, as well as scooter or motorcycle accidents, the head almost never hits the ground perpendicularly. Impacts are typically oblique, involving tangential forces. This is where rotational injuries occur. When the helmet strikes the ground at an angle, the impact generates rotational force transmitted to the skull.

Because the brain is soft and suspended in protective fluid, when the skull is forced into rapid rotation, the brain lags for a fraction of a second. This creates intense mechanical stress that can cause a type of widespread microscopic damage known as diffuse axonal injury.

Axons are the communication fibers of neurons. When overstretched or twisted, they can be damaged or torn. Since this damage is widespread rather than localized, the consequences can be extremely serious.

How it differs from traditional helmets

Traditional helmets are highly effective at absorbing linear impacts and preventing fractures or contusions. However, they are far less effective at managing rotational forces. This is why new technologies have been developed, such as the Alpha Wave’s RLS or the MIPS systems used by other manufacturers. These systems incorporate a low-friction layer between the helmet and the head, allowing slight sliding during impact. This decouples the rotation of the outer shell from the rotation of the head, reducing the transfer of rotational stress to the brain.

Smart bike helmet, maximum connectivity

The smart helmet also incorporates advanced connectivity. Built-in speakers allow riders to listen to music or navigation instructions while still hearing external sounds, which is essential for road safety. Microphones enable hands-free phone calls via Bluetooth connection to a smartphone.

Visibility has also been prioritized. The Alpha Wave features both front and rear LED lights to increase rider visibility. The front light reaches about 200 lumens, a significant level for seeing and being seen in poorly lit urban environments. Because the American company Also manufactures electric bikes as well, riders who purchase an e-bike from the same brand can synchronize the helmet with the bike’s lighting system.

The smart bike helmet is expected to launch at around 250 dollars, with initial deliveries planned for spring 2026.
