Next-generation geothermal project at Cape Station
ABB has signed an agreement with Texas-based Fervo Energy, a leader in advanced geothermal systems, to provide motor control solutions for the project. Cape Station is expected to begin delivering reliable, carbon-free electricity to the grid in 2026 and is projected to become the world’s largest next-generation geothermal plant by installed capacity.
The project represents a major step forward for sustainable energy production in the United States.
Advanced drilling unlocks geothermal potential
The partnership brings ABB’s expertise in electrification and motor control technologies to help maximize the output of one of the most innovative geothermal projects currently under development.
Cape Station will see Fervo Energy deploy advanced drilling techniques to create horizontal wells in geothermal reservoirs. This approach allows multiple wells to be drilled from a single surface location.
The method reduces surface footprint, minimizes drilling risks and unlocks geothermal resources that were previously difficult to access, expanding the potential of stable and clean energy production.
The project is expected to begin delivering electricity to the grid by the end of 2026, adding around 100 MW of capacity by early 2027 and ultimately reaching 500 MW. At full capacity, the plant could supply electricity to roughly 355,000 U.S. homes annually.
ABB technologies for geothermal electrification
“ABB is globally recognized for delivering reliable and high-performance electrification and motor control solutions for critical energy projects,” said Tim Latimer, CEO and co-founder of Fervo Energy. “Their proven track record and ability to advise, develop and execute projects at scale made ABB the clear choice for Cape Station.”
Under the agreement, ABB will deliver a complete medium-voltage motor control package, including more than 80 drives that will efficiently manage a large share of horsepower across critical equipment.
The scope of supply also includes medium-voltage motors, generators, low-voltage motor control centers and medium-voltage switchgear to support several aspects of the project.
ABB will also provide prefabricated eHouse units designed to host well pad drive systems and related electrical infrastructure.
Strategic partnership for energy innovation
“Our strategic partnerships with innovative clean energy producers such as Fervo Energy reinforce our commitment to expanding the potential of reliable and renewable energy sources with our proven electrification technologies available today,” said Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Motion.
“We are excited about Fervo Energy’s work and particularly about the potential of Cape Station to contribute to a sustainable energy future.”
Together, ABB and Fervo Energy are combining advanced technologies and proven expertise to strengthen grid resilience and support the growing demand for stable, locally produced energy.
